The patient became septic and suffered numerous organ failures, which included her kidneys which did not recover. Hemodialysis and later peritoneal dialysis was her new norm. After 80 days of hospitalization, after a time when she was close to death, and began the long road back to health. The way she lived her life was forever altered. Angelica had been on dialysis for a year-and-ahalf before finally being able to undergo the biggest operation of her life, a kidney transplant. The kidney that would be donated to her came from none other than her mother. Angelica and mom had the surgery to remove their kidneys successfully on September 13, 2013 at Emory University Hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston, two hospitals that are located next to one.
